Canes clip Eagles in OT
The U11 AAA Halton Hurricanes continued their pursuit of a birth in the OMHA Championship Tournament, as round robin play continued on Friday night with a rematch in Burlington against the Eagles.
The 'Canes were coming off a "come from behind" OT win at home last Sunday against the Eagles, and were looking to steal one on the road in a key matchup.
The Hurricanes jumped ahead with 3 minutes to go in the 1st as Preston Sedlezky converted on a pass from Hayden Cochren. The visitors would stretch that lead to 2 goals as Hayden "Big Rig" Cochren powered his way to the net and slid one through the 5 hole (assisted by Anthony Terkalas).
The Eagles got one back in the last minute of the period, cutting the Hurricanes lead in half.
After an uneventful 2nd period, the Eagles tied the game 4 minutes into the 3rd, and then with 5 minutes to go took a 3-2 lead.
The Hurricanes again would not quit, and after hitting a post and missing on a breakaway were finally able to push the tying goal across with 1:48 to go as James Del Duca stuffed in a wrap-around.
Again, these 2 teams would head into sudden death overtime. After both teams traded chances in the extra frame, the visitors would silence the Appleby Arena as Preston Sedlezky jammed home a pass from Anthony Terkalas giving the Hurricanes another 4-3 OT win over the Eagles.
With the W, the Hurricanes now sit atop Group B with 8 points. Burlington and Niagara are tied for 2nd, each with 6 points. Burlington has 1 game remaining (at home to Niagara on March 19th) and Niagara will then host the Hurricanes on March 20th closing out round robin play.
The top 2 teams from this group will advance, and every game among the top 3 teams has been a 1 goal game with every game going into overtime.
Best of luck to all teams as head into the final 2 games in the round robin.
In Group A, Oakville and Southern Tier are through to the OMHA playoffs.
