The Novice AAA Halton Hurricanes opened their full-ice season with a dominant 7-2 win at home over the visiting Oakville Rangers Thursday evening.
Nolan Lillicrap got the 'Canes going just over 4 minutes into the 1st period, tucking one home with assists coming from Anthony Terkalas and Hayden Cochren. Just over 3 minutes later, Rory Parker put the 'Canes up by 2 with a nifty unassisted goal.
Colin Mayberry put the home side up by 3 early in the 2nd as he wired home a wrist shot from the point with assists coming from Parker and Hudson Day and then 3 minutes after that goal, Terkalas sniped one home giving the Hurricanes a 4-0 lead.
Oakville got one back, narrowing the 'Canes lead to 4-1 with 1:45 to go in the 2nd but just 37 seconds later Halton's Preston Sedlezky banged home a rebound of a Willie Clahane shot to give the Hurricanes back their 4 goal lead to end the 2nd.
Oakville scored a powerplay goal 2:32 into the 3rd, narrowing the gap to 5-2 but that is as close as they could get as the Hurricanes responded with 2 more goals. Sedlezky scored again, with Parker adding another assist and then Parker wrapped up the scoring with 26 seconds left with assists coming from Clahane and Tyler Hickey.
Owen John went the distance in goal for the Hurricanes, and Parker (with 2 goals, 3 assists) and Sedlezky (2 goals) led the way offensively for the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes will now pack up and head to Whitby for the Novice Winter Classic on Friday.
The team will open up against the host Wildcats Friday at 11:15am and will face the Kitchener Rangers at 4pm.
