U16 Canada Winter Games
If you have the internet and are a hockey fan in Ontario, it would have been pretty hard to avoid perhaps one of the greatest minor hockey games played in years. And, two players from the U16 Halton Hurricanes team had a major role in the game.
In Prince Edward Island, Matthew Schaefer and Tyler Hopkins, both members of the defending OMHA Champion Halton Hurricanes 07 team helped Team Ontario’s U16 team win the gold medal at the Canada Winter Games.
In a dramatic and exciting 3 on 3 double overtime, Matthew Schaefer scored the game winning goal after a defensive zone face-off win by Tyler Hopkins.
Schaefer, who was chosen as the Team Ontario captain drove to the net to tip in the game winner. Both boys are impact players on our current U16 Halton team and it was wonderful seeing both of them on the ice for the final goal.
Tyler Hopkins has been the Hurricanes 07 captain since the team has started choosing captains and he has played with the Hurricanes since his atom year, twice leading the team to the OHF Championships.
The entire Halton Hurricanes organization is proud of both Matthew and Tyler. The two boys are already excited to return to their Halton team where their Hurricanes U16 teammates have been able to start their playoffs without them sporting a solid 3 wins and no loses in their absence. The U16 Hurricanes are looking forward to a great playoff run after winning the SCTA league title and are looking to pursue the defence of their OMHA title and a trip to the prestige OHL Cup.
